Just 15 mins was all it took to shred the garden
  • About this album
  • In October 2007, we experienced a hailstorm like no other we'd been through. It was early spring and the garden was just starting to come into bloom - all this was wiped out in just 15 mins of destruction. The garden has since regrown and is in need of major pruning (perhaps another hailstorm might help). Most of the surrounding area was affected but the interesting thing now is that when driving through the area, one notices all the new roofs on old homes.

Unfortunately, the insurance company we're with (ALLIANZ) has staff that really should only be hired to sweep toilets. Still waiting Allianz - get your act together!

    Minutes after it started
    Hailstorm002.jpg
Had to take this shot in a hurry whilst the stones thundered on the roof
    Hailstorm003.jpg
A few stones simply appeared in the house - not sure how they got in.
    Hailstorm006.jpg
No, it was nothing like a winter wonderland
    Hailstorm008.jpg
And the damage was starting to show
    Hailstorm009.jpg
All the different stone sizes - the piece of metal was once part of the TV antenna.
    Hailstorm010.jpg
The layer of leaves on the ground was becoming thick
    Hailstorm012.jpg
This was just one of the stones that landed on the balcony - and it wasn't the largest
    Hailstorm015.jpg
I was surprised that the Bali Hut stood the battering

    The neighbours roof
    Hailstorm020.jpg
    The plants were all shredded

    Hailstorm024.jpg
This was the first time the Bali Hut ever got wet
    Hailstorm027.jpg
Not one Hippeastrum left and neither was there a bud left on the rose bush
    Hailstorm028.jpg
Not much left on the bottlebrush bush either

At least the flowers will still appear later in the year on these Heliconias
    Hailstorm034.jpg
    Every tree fern leaf broke
    Hailstorm035.jpg
The Irises were completely shredded - just two or 3 flower stalks survived.
    Hailstorm037.jpg
Note the jagged edges on the large stones
    Hailstorm040.jpg
My precious Christmas Heliconias - gone!
    Hailstorm041.jpg
Well, guess the Lemons had to fall off sooner or later
    Hailstorm042.jpg
Our driveway covered in leaf litter
    Hailstorm044.jpg
This was at least 4 to 5 cm deep
    Hailstorm045.jpg
Piled up against the garage door - the purple bits are the Jacaranda flowers
    Hailstorm046.jpg
This was the covering on the nature strip

About 20 mins after the event. At least our roof didn't cave in.
